Carrier 27VNA1

Checked against 27VNA1 Infinity Variable Speed Cold Climate Heat Pump with Greenspeed Intelligence — Product Data, September 2026.

Heat pump on R-454B, 4.5 ton. Here is what the Carrier documents say you can keep.

27VNA1 is a model family. The data plate on your unit carries a longer number that starts with 27VNA1 — the size and revision digits follow it. This page covers the family.

What you can keep

Indoor coil

Has to be replaced

Your existing R-410A indoor coil cannot stay. Carrier states that full furnace coils are not interchangeable and that the refrigerant the indoor coil is designed for must match the outdoor unit's.

Not checked: your own coil against this unit. That needs its model number, which is on the coil label inside the air handler or furnace cabinet.

Carrier's brand rule — see the brand page.

Line set

Can stay, with conditions

Your copper can normally stay. Carrier says there is no system-side reason to replace a line set, because R-454B uses the same POE oil as R-410A — but it puts the decision under your building code.

  • The line set continues to meet the local building code in force, which is what Carrier makes the reuse conditional on.
  • In high-rise buildings, Carrier states that fire breaks will be required on the refrigerant run.

Not checked: your line size. The 27VNA1 uses 3/8" liquid with 1-1/8" suction, by capacity, and you have not measured the outside diameter of both copper lines.

Carrier's brand rule — see the brand page.

Furnace

Can stay

Your existing gas furnace does not have to be replaced and needs no add-on kit. Carrier states that the dissipation control intercepts the signal from the thermostat and the furnace otherwise operates exactly as designed.

Carrier's brand rule — see the brand page.

How Carrier lists this unit

Tier Infinity
Compressor variable-speed
Region Northern efficiency region only
Coastal option Not listed

The region column reads "North CCHP", and the guide's footnote calls it a cold climate heat pump giving 100% heat capacity at 0 degrees, available in 4.5 ton only. Its R-410A column is empty: this model replaces nothing.

What the documents say about this model

ManufacturerCarrier builds this family in one capacity. The sheet's catalog ordering table has a single row — size 54, model number 27VNA154A003, 4.5 nominal tons — where its other residential families span five to seven sizes. There is no smaller or larger build to be quoted instead.

ManufacturerIt is rated to deliver 100 percent of its heating capacity down to 5F outdoor ambient and to go on running in heating down to -23F, with cooling available down to 0F when the Infinity control enables it. That is what the cold climate designation on the transition guide means in the manufacturer's own figures.

ManufacturerLong line runs need no accessories on this family — the sheet says so in as many words. It allows 200 feet of actual tubing and 250 feet of total equivalent length, with 200 feet of vertical separation when the outdoor unit sits above the indoor one and 80 feet when it sits below. A run counts as long line past 80 equivalent feet, or past 20 feet of vertical drop with the outdoor unit below.

ManufacturerIts cooling capacity loss table is printed to a tenth of a percent against eleven separate lengths, rather than the whole numbers and nine length bands Carrier's single-stage families publish. On the rated 1-1/8 inch vapor line the unit loses nothing at 25 feet and 4.4 percent at 250. The same run on 7/8 inch copper costs 9.1 percent, and on 3/4 inch 14.7 percent.

Approved and certified combinations

We have not yet read a published match list for this unit. Ask your installer for the AHRI certified reference number of the combination they are quoting — every certified pair has one.

What to ask your installer about the 27VNA1

  1. The 27VNA1 takes 3/8" liquid with 1-1/8" suction, by capacity. Which capacity are you quoting me, and does my existing copper match the diameters for it?

The questions to ask about any Carrier swap are on the Carrier rules page.
