Can You Reuse Your Line Set with R-454B?

Usually yes, and the reason is the oil. What the manufacturer actually makes the reuse conditional on, and what this site cannot yet tell you about your own line size.

This is the cheapest good news in the whole A2L transition, and it is worth understanding why it is true rather than just being told it.

Why the copper usually stays

R-454B uses the same POE oil as R-410A. That is the whole reason. Refrigerant changes have historically forced line sets out because the new oil was not compatible with the residue of the old one — the R-22 to R-410A change is the one people remember. This transition does not have that problem.

Carrier states it directly: line sets can be reused as long as they continue to meet local building codes, and there is no need to replace them from a system standpoint, because R-454B uses POE oil as well.

What the reuse is conditional on

Read that sentence again, because the condition is not a formality — Carrier puts the decision under your building code, not under its own approval:

• The line set has to meet the building code in force. Not the code when it was installed. The current one.
• In high-rise buildings, fire breaks are required on the refrigerant run. Carrier says this specifically.

Local building codes regulate what is needed for refrigerant runs. That is a sentence about your jurisdiction, not about your equipment, and it is the reason a straight yes-or-no answer to this question does not exist on the internet.

What this page cannot tell you yet

Whether your line is the right size for the unit being fitted. That comes from the outdoor unit’s own spec sheet — the required liquid and suction line diameters — and this site has not yet read those documents for the Carrier range. When it has, the model pages will check your diameters against the requirement, and until then they will say they cannot.

Beware of any source that answers the sizing question generically. Line sizing depends on the unit, its capacity and the length of the run, and a line that was correct for your old system is not automatically correct for the new one.

What to ask

• Are you reusing my line set, or is a new one in the quote?
• Does my existing line set meet the current building code for this installation?
• What line size does this outdoor unit require, and what do I have?
