The Fitting at Your Unit Is Not Your Line Size

Manufacturers publish two different numbers for the same copper: the connection at the service valve and the tube the unit is rated on. On most families they disagree at the top of the range.

Somebody is going to tell you the size of your line set by looking at the unit outside. It is the obvious place to look — the pipes arrive there, the fittings are visible, and a number is often stamped nearby.

The manufacturers publish that number. They also publish a different one for the same run of copper, a few rows further down the same table, and the two do not always agree.

Two rows, two meanings

Open any Carrier residential product data sheet at its Physical Data page and you will find both of these:

They are not two ways of saying one thing. One describes a fitting on the cabinet; the other describes the tube the unit’s published performance was measured with.

Where they part company

On the small capacities the two rows usually read the same, which is why the distinction goes unnoticed for years. Then the range gets bigger.

The five ton is where most families split. On the 24SPA6 the valve connection at 5 tons is 7/8 inch and the rated vapour line is 1-1/8. The 27SCA5 does the same thing at its top size. So does almost every single-stage family read for this site.

Some families split earlier. The 24VNA6 disagrees at both 4 and 5 tons — two of its four capacities — where the valve reads 7/8 and the line is rated at 1-1/8.

And some disagree everywhere. On the 24VNA9 and the 25VNA8 the rated tube is a size above the valve connection at every capacity in the family: 5/8 at the valve against 3/4 of copper at the bottom of the range, 7/8 against 1-1/8 at the top. On those two families there is no size at all where measuring the fitting gives you the line.

Why it matters when you are being quoted

The question this site exists for is whether the copper already in your wall suits the unit being put on the pad. That comparison only works if both numbers mean the same thing.

If your existing line was recorded from a valve stub and the new unit’s requirement is a rated tube diameter, you are comparing a fitting against a pipe. On a five ton swap that is the difference between 7/8 and 1-1/8 — one full size, and the difference between reusing the line and running new copper through a finished ceiling.

What to do instead

Measure the copper, not the connection. Take the outside diameter on a straight section away from the fittings and the insulation, and use that.

Then compare it with the rated tube size for the model — which is the number on the model pages here, and the one in the line set table. And if the answer comes out one size under, that is a conversation to have before the equipment arrives, not after the old unit is off the pad.

Where should I measure my line set?

Not at the service valve. Measure the outside diameter of the copper itself, on a straight run away from the fittings, and compare that with the rated tube size for your model. The stub at the unit is a connection size and the manufacturer publishes it separately for a reason.

Which number does this site list?

The rated tube outside diameter — the copper — on every model page and in the line set table. Never the valve connection. Taking the wrong row would put a wrong line size on a page, which is the mistake this whole site exists to avoid.

Do the two numbers ever match?

Usually, on the smaller capacities. They part company at the top of most families: the five ton is very often a 7/8 inch valve connection against a 1-1/8 inch rated line.
