R-410A Coil With an R-454B Condenser: What Actually Happens
The pairing people are quoted and then talked out of. What the manufacturer says about it, and what a coil that is not interchangeable actually means.
This is the specific pairing that starts arguments: a new A2L outdoor unit, and the R-410A evaporator coil that is already sitting in your furnace cabinet.
What the manufacturer says
Carrier answers it in one line, and the wording matters: full furnace coils are not interchangeable, and the refrigerant designed for the indoor coil must match that of the outdoor unit.
It also answers the version people really mean — putting the new refrigerant into the old system — separately: R-454B is not a drop-in replacement. The pressures and temperatures are close to R-410A, but the equipment still requires new compressors and expansion devices for ideal operation, and Carrier’s conclusion from that is that R-454B should not be used in R-410A systems. And Carrier says its equipment cannot be used for both refrigerants at all.
Why “not interchangeable” is not the same as “will not fit”
The two parts will connect. That is exactly why this question keeps being asked, and why the answer sounds arbitrary to somebody holding a quote.
What differs is not the plumbing. It is the metering device — the component that controls how much refrigerant enters the coil, and which is sized for a specific refrigerant’s pressure and temperature behaviour. Carrier names the expansion device explicitly as one of the two things that has to be different. A coil is not a passive box of copper; it is a rated assembly, and its rating is what an AHRI certified combination certifies.
That is also why nobody can tell you how badly a mismatched pair would perform. There is no rating for a combination the manufacturer never tested, so the honest answer to “how much worse would it be” is that nobody published a number, and anybody quoting you one made it up.
The conversion kit question
Carrier said, at the time it wrote its FAQ, that it was investigating a conversion kit allowing a change from R-410A to R-454B. It named no kit, no part number and no timeline. If your contractor mentions one, the question to ask is which document it is in.
What this means for your quote
If the outdoor unit on your quote is A2L, the coil line on that quote is not an upsell — it is what the manufacturer requires. The real decision is one step earlier: whether you want an A2L system at all, or a like-for-like R-410A service replacement that keeps the coil you have.

Questions people ask
Can I put R-454B into my existing R-410A coil?
No. Carrier states that R-454B is not a drop-in replacement and should not be used in R-410A systems, because the compressor and expansion device are built for a different refrigerant.
What does "coils are not interchangeable" actually mean?
It means the refrigerant the indoor coil is designed for has to match the refrigerant of the outdoor unit. It is a statement about how the coil was built and rated, not about whether the two parts physically connect.
Is there a conversion kit to change my R-410A coil to R-454B?
Carrier said it was investigating one and named none. Until a manufacturer publishes a kit with a part number, there is nothing to ask for.
The rules this rests on
In force Servicing an R-410A system is allowed; rebuilding one is not. The rule does not restrict the continued use of any existing system. A system may be serviced and repaired throughout its useful life, including by replacing components, and the components needed to do that may still be manufactured, imported, sold, distributed and exported. What is restricted is installing a new system. Three actions count as installing one, once the system is charged to full charge: assembling a system for the first time from new or used components; increasing the cooling capacity in BTU per hour of an existing system; or replacing 75 percent or more of the evaporators by number together with all of the compressor racks, condensers and connected evaporator loads. This is the rule that decides whether swapping one box is service or is a new system.
