Mismatched Coil and Condenser: What Is Actually Known
The internet is full of confident numbers about mismatched systems. Here is the documented part: the manufacturer's rule, the certified combination, and where a repair becomes a new system.
Search this question and you will get numbers: percentages of lost efficiency, predictions about humidity, warnings about compressor life. Very few of them cite anything.
This page stays with what is documented, which is less than the forums claim and more useful than it sounds.
What is documented
The manufacturer’s rule. For an A2L outdoor unit the matter is settled and not a matter of degree: full furnace coils are not interchangeable, and the refrigerant designed for the indoor coil must match that of the outdoor unit. There is no performance discussion to have, because it is not a combination the manufacturer recognises.
The metering device. Carrier names the expansion device, alongside the compressor, as one of the two things that has to be different between R-410A and R-454B equipment. This is the mechanism behind the rule — the component metering refrigerant into the coil is matched to a specific refrigerant’s behaviour, not to the pipe it connects to.
The certified combination. Outdoor units and indoor coils are tested and rated as pairs, and each rated pair carries an AHRI certified reference number. A combination without one has not been rated by anybody. That is the precise, checkable version of “mismatched”: not a coil that fits badly, but a pair that nobody measured.
The point where it stops being a repair. Replacing 75% or more of the evaporators together with all of the condensers and compressor racks counts as installing a new system, as does increasing the system’s cooling capacity in BTU per hour. Once the work crosses that line, A2L equipment is required regardless of what would have physically worked.
What is not documented, and this site will not guess
How badly a specific unrated pair performs. There is no rating for a combination that was never tested, so there is no honest number to give you — and the absence of a number is itself the argument. If a mismatched pair were predictable, it would have a rating.

Possibly, and that is what makes the question hard. What can be stated is that nobody has rated the combination, so no published figure exists for how it performs. Anyone quoting you a specific efficiency loss for an untested pair invented it.
What is an AHRI certified reference number?
It is the number identifying a specific outdoor unit and indoor coil combination that has been tested and rated together. Asking your installer for the number of the pair being quoted is the single most useful question in this whole subject.
Does replacing my condenser and coil count as a new system?
It can. Replacing 75% or more of the evaporators together with all of the condensers and compressor racks counts as a new system installation, as does increasing the cooling capacity — and then A2L equipment is required.
The rules this rests on
In force Servicing an R-410A system is allowed; rebuilding one is not. The rule does not restrict the continued use of any existing system. A system may be serviced and repaired throughout its useful life, including by replacing components, and the components needed to do that may still be manufactured, imported, sold, distributed and exported. What is restricted is installing a new system. Three actions count as installing one, once the system is charged to full charge: assembling a system for the first time from new or used components; increasing the cooling capacity in BTU per hour of an existing system; or replacing 75 percent or more of the evaporators by number together with all of the compressor racks, condensers and connected evaporator loads. This is the rule that decides whether swapping one box is service or is a new system.
