R-454B vs R-410A: What Actually Changed

What R-454B is made of, why the equipment changed rather than the refrigerant being poured into old systems, and which of the differences reach a homeowner.

What R-454B is

R-454B is a blend, like R-410A before it: 68.9% R-32 and 31.1% R-1234yf. It contains no propane, whatever you have read on a forum. Carrier sells it under the name Puron Advance.

The reason for the change is a number. The EPA’s rule caps the global warming potential for residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pumps at 700, and R-410A is far above that. The driving factor in R-410A’s high GWP is its R-125 component; R-454B replaces that with R-1234yf, which has a very small GWP.

What changed for the equipment

It is not a drop-in. The pressures and temperatures are close to R-410A — Carrier says the operating pressures are slightly lower — but the compressor and the expansion device are different, so R-454B should not be put into a system built for R-410A. Equipment cannot be used for both refrigerants.

Efficiency is about the same. Carrier says SEER2 ratings are similar to those of R-410A equipment. Nobody is getting a more efficient system out of this transition; that is not what it is for.

The oil is the same. R-454B uses POE oil as R-410A does. This is why line sets are usually reusable, and it is the single most useful fact in the whole transition for a homeowner’s wallet.

Fittings and tools. Mechanical fittings are standard on R-454B equipment. Service gauges do not need reverse threads — the reverse thread is on the refrigerant cylinder, and a thread adaptor covers it.

The flammability question

R-454B is an A2L: mildly flammable. Carrier’s own wording is worth repeating, because it is more precise than most of what gets said about this — the refrigerant is not explosive, and it can only ignite when its concentration in air sits between a lower flammability limit of 11.3% and an upper limit of 23.6%.

That narrow band is why the equipment around the refrigerant changed — leak detection, dissipation controls — rather than the refrigerant being treated as dangerous in itself.

What reaches you

Three things, and they are the three this site exists to answer:

  1. Your indoor coil almost certainly has to be replaced with the outdoor unit, because the coil’s refrigerant must match.
  2. Your line set usually does not, because of the shared POE oil — subject to your building code.
  3. Your furnace depends on the brand. Carrier says no add-on items are needed for the furnace itself.

Everything else — the blend percentages, the flammability limits, the GWP arithmetic — is context. Useful context, but it will not change a line on your quote.

The rules this rests on

In force New residential systems are capped at a refrigerant GWP of 700. The EPA's Technology Transitions rule sets 700 as the global warming potential limit for the residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump subsector. From 1 January 2025 a new system in that subsector may not be installed using a refrigerant at or above that limit. Variable refrigerant flow systems are excepted from this paragraph and carry their own later dates. R-410A is far above 700, which is why the equipment changed rather than the refrigerant being reformulated.

In force What stopped on 1 January 2025, and what did not. From 1 January 2025 the rule restricts self-contained residential products — window and portable air conditioners and similar — that use a refrigerant at or above a GWP of 700, and it restricts the installation of new split systems that do. It does not restrict components: the exemptions section states that the prohibitions on manufacturing, importing, selling, distributing or exporting products do not apply to components using a regulated substance. New R-410A condensing units, coils and compressors may therefore still be built and sold for existing systems. R-410A split systems left the market because a new one may not be installed, not because every part became unlawful to make.
