A2L Leak Detection: What the Equipment Has to Do

Why A2L systems carry refrigerant detection at all, what the detection actually triggers, and which of it your manufacturer has committed to in writing.

Every A2L conversation eventually arrives at the sensor in the indoor unit. Here is what it is for, and what your manufacturer has actually committed to.

Why detection instead of containment

R-454B can only ignite inside a narrow band of concentration in air — the numbers, and why both ends of the band matter, are set out in what A2L means in your home.

The consequence is the whole of this page. Because the risk is a concentration rather than a substance, the engineering answer is a sensor and a fan rather than a sealed box: keep the concentration below the lower limit and the flammability classification stops mattering. Detection is not there because the refrigerant is dangerous. It is there because a number has to be kept down.

What the detection triggers

Carrier describes a dissipation control: it intercepts the signal from the thermostat and changes the inputs to the furnace based on any need for dissipation. In plain terms, the control takes over and runs air through the system so that refrigerant does not accumulate.

What each brand has committed to

Carrier states that all Carrier fan coils ship with a full leak detection system already installed in the equipment. That is a clear, checkable commitment, and it covers fan coils.

It is not a statement about furnace coils, and this site does not extend it to them. The leak detection table shows every indoor unit on the site and which of the two situations it is in — including the rows where the honest entry is not published.

Does every A2L system need leak detection?

A2L equipment is designed around detection and dispersal rather than containment. What this site can state per brand is which indoor units the manufacturer says ship with detection installed — that table is at /a2l/leak-detection-by-brand.

What happens when a leak is detected?

Carrier describes a dissipation control that intercepts the thermostat signal and changes the inputs to the furnace so that air is moved. The aim is to keep any refrigerant concentration below the level at which it could ignite.

Is my house at risk from a mildly flammable refrigerant?

Carrier states that R-454B is not explosive and can only ignite between a lower flammability limit of 11.3% and an upper limit of 23.6% concentration in air. The detection and dispersal hardware exists to keep a leak from reaching that band.

The rules this rests on

In force New residential systems are capped at a refrigerant GWP of 700. The EPA's Technology Transitions rule sets 700 as the global warming potential limit for the residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump subsector. From 1 January 2025 a new system in that subsector may not be installed using a refrigerant at or above that limit. Variable refrigerant flow systems are excepted from this paragraph and carry their own later dates. R-410A is far above 700, which is why the equipment changed rather than the refrigerant being reformulated.
